Undergraduate Students

 

1. MEXT Scholarship


A. Those who wish to enroll as a MEXT scholarship student
For application of MEXT scholarship, please contact Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country.

 

B. Those who are currently registered in a university in Japan as a MEXT scholar and wish to advance to the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo with holding the MEXT scholarship status.
Please contact an administrative office in the University currently you are registered for the matter. The application will be made through the university in Japan. 

 

2. Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (JASSO)


Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers honors scholarships for privately financed international students who attend university or graduate school in Japan, are of good character, have a good academic record, and require financial assistance to continue their studies as an international student.

 

The conditions are as follows:

Monthly stipend: Undergraduate level: \48,000/month (as of April 2020)
Period: 6 month / 12 month

1st and 2nd year students

3. Scholarships provided by Private Scholarship Organizations

 

1st and 2nd year students
Those who are interested in applying for scholarships through the university should contact Komaba International Student Support Room.

 

3rd and 4th year students
There are various privately administered scholarships that are available to international students. In some cases application is made directly to the sponsoring organization, while in others application is made through GAIA. In the latter case, admitted and current students need to be registered on the scholarship allocation program offered by Faculty of Economics/ the Graduate School of Economics. Please refer to “Registration for Scholarship from Private Foundation” .

Recent increase in number of international students has made it highly competitive for them to be awarded some kind of private scholarships. As a matter of fact, about half of the international students wishing to get a scholarship are fortunate enough to earn it. Graduate students

 

1. MEXT Scholarship

 

The Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers three types of scholarships, namely, Embassy Recommendation, University Recommendation and Domestic Selection.

 

(1) MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation): please check here for further details.

 

(2) MEXT scholarship (University Recommendation): targeted for the newly incoming students expected to enroll in September/October. Most appropriate applicants will be selected and made a call by Graduate School of Economics in January prior to the enrollment. After an interview, successful applicants are nominated to MEXT and then finalists will be announced in June. One student per a fiscal year has been constantly granted from 2010 to 2017 but none after 2018.

 

2. The University of Tokyo Fellowship Special Scholarship for International Students

 

This scholarship was established in 2004 with the aim at providing a research grant to high-achieving, postgraduate international students who are privately-funded to assist their academic pursuits at the University and at promoting a greater acceptance of excellent students from overseas.

Monthly stipend: Graduate level: \200,000/month (as of September 2020)

Period: Standard duration of the program (2 years for Master’s students

Most appropriate applicants will be contacted from the Graduate School of Economics. Three April enrollees and two September enrollees are granted in 2018, 1 each for April and September in 2017 and 2 for April and 2 for September in 2020.


3. Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (Japan Student Services Organization)

4 students for 12 month and 9 for 6 month were granted in the year 2018, 3 for 12 month and 7 for 6 month in 2019 and 5 for 12 month and 1 for 6 month in 2020.


4. Scholarship for International Students, The University of Tokyo Foundation

 

Monthly stipend: ¥50,000/month (as of April 2020)
Period: 6 month / 12 month

Most appropriate applicant will be contacted from GAIA.

1 student for 12 month each year is granted in 2018 onward.


5. Scholarships provided by Private Scholarship Organizations
