Scholarships provided by Private Scholarship Organizations

 

1st and 2nd year students
Those who are interested in applying for scholarships through the university should contact Komaba International Student Support Room

 

3rd and 4th year students
There are various privately sponsored scholarships that are available to international students. In some cases applications are made directly to the sponsoring organization, while in the others applications are made through UTokyo. In the latter case, students need to be registered in advance in the scholarship allocation program offered by Faculty of Economics. Please refer to “Registration for Scholarship from Private Foundation” .
Recent increase in number of international students has made it highly competitive for them to be awarded some kind of private scholarships. We suggest you look into Scholarships Offered by Private Organizations regularly and apply for the scholarships under the Direct application category as well.

 

Graduate students

1. MEXT Scholarship

 

The Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships for international students.

 

*A MEXT scholar who is currently registered in a university in Japan and wish to advance to the Graduate School of Economics, UTokyo with hoping to continuously hold the MEXT status should contact an administrative office of the University currently registered for the instruction.

 

(1) MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation): please check here for further details.

 

(2) MEXT scholarship (University Recommendation): targeted for the newly incoming students expected to enroll in October. Most appropriate applicants will be selected and contacted by Graduate School of Economics in January prior to the enrollment. After an interview, successful applicants are nominated to MEXT and then finalists will be announced in June. One student per a fiscal year has been constantly granted from 2010 to 2017 but none after 2018.

 

2. The University of Tokyo Fellowship Special Scholarship for International Students

 

This scholarship was established in 2004 with the aim at providing a research grant to high-achieving, postgraduate international students who are privately-funded to assist their academic pursuits at the University and at promoting a greater acceptance of excellent students from overseas.

 

Monthly stipend: Graduate level: \200,000/month (as of October 2022)

Period: Standard duration of the program

Most appropriate applicants will be contacted from the Graduate School of Economics.

 

2020: 2 April enrollees and 2 September enrollees were granted

2021: 2 October enrollees were granted

2022: 2 April enrollees and 2 October enrollees were granted


3. Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (Japan Student Services Organization)

 

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers honors scholarships for privately financed international students who attend university or graduate school in Japan, are of good character, have good academic record, and require financial assistance to continue their studies as an international student.

 

The conditions are as follows:
Monthly stipend: Graduate level: \48,000/month (as of October 2022)
Period: 6month / 12month

Most appropriate applicants will be contacted from the Graduate School of Economics.

 

2020: 5 students for 12month and 1 for 6month were granted.

2021: 3 students for 12month and 8 for 6month were granted.

2022: 2 students for 12month and 1 for 6month were granted.


4. Scholarship for International Students, The University of Tokyo Foundation

 

Monthly stipend: ¥50,000/month (as of October 2022)
Period: 6month / 12month

Most appropriate applicant will be contacted from the Graduate School of Economics.

1 student for 12month per year is granted every year.


5. Scholarships provided by Private Scholarship Organizations

 

There are various privately sponsored scholarships that are available to international students. In some cases applications are made directly to the sponsoring organization, while in the others applications are made through UTokyo. 6. Funding for Doctoral students

 

Doctoral students are regarded as researchers rather than students. Your chance to apply for a scholarship will be very limited but we suggest register our scholarship program mentioned in 5. above.
