Courses, etc.

QExcept that many courses of this program will be offered in English, is there any other difference between this UTIPE and a normal master program of economics in UTokyo? Will this program render a different degree as the normal (Japanese) master of economics program in UTokyo?

ANo. There is no difference. The point is that courses will be offered in English and the entrance examination procedure is different.

QKindly provide a list of core courses required for graduation.

ACore courses consist of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics. If you can't obtain credits of these three core courses, you can't complete UTIPE program and a master's degree will not be awarded.

QCan students take electives from another school within the University of Tokyo?

AIn the Master's course, you can take 8 credits from another graduate school and 4 credits from other faculties including faculty of economics within the University of Tokyo while in the doctoral course, you can take 4 credits from another graduate school.

QDo you offer Japanese language courses for international students?

ACenter for Japanese Language Education, UTokyo offers the Japanese courses for those students who are admitted to enter any graduate school within the University of Tokyo after enrollment. You can choose the class which meets the level of your Japanese abilities.

QCan students double major inside and/or outside the Graduate School of Economics?

AWe don't have this system of double major at this moment.

Math

QHow technical (in Math) does your program require? If I haven't learned dynamic programming before, is that a problem in evaluation?

AMathematics background is very important. The required level of mathematics is essentially the same as the level required at the economics programs of US graduate schools. Linear algebra and calculus are both important. Dynamic programming is preferable, but not a must. We have a mathematics review course which covers the above-mentioned three subjects for the first year students.

Supervisor

QWhen is my supervisor for my master thesis decided?

ASupervisors for UTIPE master students will be decided at the end of the first year. UTIPE master students must choose their supervisor from UTIPE faculties.

QCan I change my supervisor to a professor other than UTIPE faculties after the advancement to doctoral program? Can I advance to doctoral program at Graduate School of Economics other than UTIPE?

AUTIPE master students should advance to UTIPE doctoral program, and they must choose their supervisor for Dissertation from UTIPE faculties.

Maximum allowable time, etc.

QWhat is the maximum allowable time to complete the Master's program?

AThree years including two minimum years and one extra year for staying another year are allowed. If, for some reason, leave of absence is taken, two more years for a leave of absence may be added. So a total of five years may be allowed.

QIs it possible to complete the master program in UTIPE in one and a half years?

ANo. April enrollees can complete only in March and October enrollees can complete only in September.
